New Cable Lineup features HD Channels!

New Channel Lineup Launched for Fall 2007

The campus TV lineup has changed thanks to a new agreement between Carnegie Mellon and Falls Earth Station, Inc. (http://www.fallsearth.com/) to provide on-campus CATV programming services. The customized lineup, which includes more than 80 analog channels, will be broadcast across campus and provided free-of-charge to campus residents as a convenience of residency.

New stations were added at the suggestion of student input, including a larger selection of international news and special-interest stations. The new channel lineup is available here and still includes the popular Housing Movie Channel (HMC16). Oakland Community residents will continue to be served by Comcast, with a channel lineup available here.

How to set up Carnegie Mellon HD-TV Channels

The HD-TV channels are available for all residents with HD TV's in all buildings with the campus cable service.

The four HD-TV channels are:
110-1 WTAE-DT
110-11 KDKA-HD
111-1 WPXI-DT
111-11 WPGH-DT

1. In order for these channels to tune in on a TV, the following conditions must be met:

An HDTV set with integral QAM tuner must be used; or
An HDTV set-top box (sometimes called an HDTV tuner) with a QAM decoder
must be used; or

An HDPC TV tuner card with QAM decoder must be installed in a computer.

2. a. If an HDTV (with QAM tuner) set is used, the Hi Def channels can be found by running the "auto-program/auto-tune" function after verifying that the set is connected to the campus cable system and that the tuner is looking for "cable".

b. If a set-top box (with QAM tuner) is used, connect the input of the STB to the campus cable system and then connect the STB to your TV. The HDTV STB will find the two new channels.

c. If an HDPC card is used, connect the computer's TV card input to the campus cable system and search for the channels.

IMPORTANT: It is imperative that whatever route is chosen, that the tuning device be QAM-capable.  Many "HDTVs" are actually "HDTV-ready" or "HDTV-capable" meaning that a tuner is still needed.

Telecom has found that the easiest way to select the HD channels after they have been programmed into the tuner is to simply push the 'up arrow" key. Most remote controls have no way to type in 110-1 or -11.

If, after having exhausted all serious attempts to tune these new stations, you still have difficulty with this process, please call 412-268-8500 (the Telecom Trouble line).
