| Moving to college always is
associated with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Each year a
number of individuals start this experience by living in temporary
housing. Previous to fall 2006 we have had anywhere from 30-90
first-year students stay in a local hotel for the first few weeks of
their college experience. Based on student and family feedback, temp
housing was moved for fall 2006 into two first year environments in
Donner House and in Morewood Gardens E-Tower. Hosting temp housing in
these places allows for temp housing residents to be a part of the
on-campus experience and, more specifically, part of the first-year
experience. It is our hope these changes will make the temp housing
experience more comfortable for all involved. We recognize that moving
into temp housing comes with some challenges. Temp housing residents
are not in their final fall room and will end up moving most likely
during September, so all in these spaces are not completely settled at
move-in. Also, while we intentionally choose larger spaces the
accommodations are a bit more snug than in most other spaces on campus
(as such the cost is less for these temp spaces).
We recognize these challenges are real, but with some patience and hospitality and lots of good communication and flexibility, this experience will be a positive one for the residents in temp housing and for those other residents on their shared floor. We look forward to helping these student in their transition and success as new Carnegie Mellon students! |
