Dear Residents:

With resident support and cooperation, Housing Services strives to maintain a
more secure environment in our residential houses. During the past several
years, Carnegie Mellon University has enacted several programs to enhance the
security of residents. Housing Services limits access to the residential
houses to the residents and their guest and exterior and individual room
doors are equipped with a card access system.

We are asking everyone to take precautions when allowing an unknown person to
follow them into the building. Most crimes are committed by chance, by
opportunity. The more times, as students and staff, that we do not show our
ID, or allow an unknown person to follow (tag) into the building behind us,
the less secure our buildings become.

Desk Assistants are students that provide resource assistance and monitor
building access to ensure that residence houses are free from uninvited
visitors; however, the responsibility rests with all of us (staff and
students). Please help the Desk Assistants maintain the security of our
community by showing your ID when entering a building staffed with a desk
attendant, by not propping doors or allowing strangers in the building and by
reporting strangers or suspicious behavior in all areas.
Again, security of the residential houses must be an awareness shared by all
of us. Please follow these simple steps to ensure that our residential
facilities continue to be a safe place to reside. If you have questions,
please email Housing Services at univhous@andrew.cmu.edu

Note: This message is being sent to you as part of House Security Awareness.

Sincerely,

Stephen Apanel
Graduate Coordinator of Desk Services
