Dear Oakland Residents:

Our DSL provider Telerama has notified me that illegal file-sharing of
copyrighted materials, such as Music MP3 files, etc; via programs such as
Kazaa, Gnutella, IRC is occurring from CMU apartment sites. We have also
received a complaint from the Motion Picture Association of America about a
specific CMU apartment connection that is hosting and sharing of
copyright-protected material, in this case the movie The Others.

This activity is in violation of both Computing Services "Residential
Network" policy and Telerama Internet's "Terms of Service" to which you are
bound as a CMU student and housing resident.

This notice is a final warning that all such violations must cease
immediately.  Because Oakland DSL is a shared connection between all
residents of each apartment, any violation of these computing policies will
result in loss of DSL service to the entire room*.  The consistent
penalty for such policy abuse has been loss of access to the CMU data network
for at least one full semester followed by university judicial action.
