Dear Resident:
Welcome to the Oakland Community Apartments! I'm writing to update you on
your High-Speed DSL Access provided by Telerama Internet. While most of our
apartments have active DSL service, there are a few cases where DSL service
has not yet begun, or DSL equipment was not available when residents checked
in. If you have your DSL Equipment
Kit, but your DSL service is not working, please do not hesitate to call
Telerama Internet at (412) 688-3200 or 1 (877) 688-3200.
For those who are still in need of a DSL Equipment Kit for your apartment,
please note that we are expecting a shipment of 50 DSL modems to arrive early
this week. This order was placed in mid-July but was delayed by the
manufacturer. We are hoping to have DSL
Equipment Kits available as early as Wednesday, August 28; please call us
first
(x8-2139) to inquire about availability.
In the meantime, Carnegie Mellon's public dialup modem pool is available for
your use. Please see below for details on the Carnegie Mellon modem pool. If
you do not have a dialup modem, Housing Services will loan you one at no
charge. Please inquire at the Housing Services office in Morewood Gardens E
Tower to obtain a modem when you pick up your DSL kit.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (412) 268-2139
or via email at jalang@andrew.cmu.edu . Also, please consult the Housing
Services DSL web site at http://www.housing.cmu.edu/DSL for weekly updates
and information concerning Oakland Community Apartments DSL service.
Sincerely,
J. Alex Lang

The Public Modem Pool at Carnegie Mellon University
The public modem pool is for the use of current faculty, students, and
staff members at Carnegie Mellon University. All users are required to
authenticate with their Andrew ID and password upon connecting to the
modem pool, either through prompts on the terminal servers or via the
Andrew Kerberos client (KClient). KClient for both Windows and
Macintosh can be downloaded from:
https://webdist.andrew.cmu.edu/downloads/kclient-kweb/
The public modem pool currently operates at a maximum speed of 56kbps.
Important information concerning the public modem pool can be found on
the Computing Services web site at:
http://www.net.cmu.edu/docs/services/remote/public.html
The number for the public modem pool is 412-268-9000. It is important
that you include the area code as part of the number, as it the area
code is now required for all local calls in the Pittsburgh (412) area.
In order to provide fair and adequate dialup service to all faculty,
staff and students who rely on the public modem pool, Carnegie Mellon
University adheres strictly to its "Fair Use Guidelines", which can be
found in more detail at:
http://www.cmu.edu/computing/documentation/policies_fairuse/fairuse.html
Modem Dial-Up with Your Computer
You need to have a modem in order to access the dial-up pool. Modems
are standard equipment on most new computers, and are roughly
equivalent to the cost of a network card and cabling that would be
required if living on campus.
Any modem that supports the V.90/ISDN standard (as well as V.34,
V.32bis, and other "slower" standards) will work with the public modem
pool. That means that almost any 28.8kbps, 33.6kbps, or 56kbps modem
will work. If your modem isn't capable of 56kbps, then the maximum
connection speed will be limited by your modem. If you don't have a
modem, you can buy one through a retail store or mail order company,
or through the campus computer store.
Unlike campus residents, there is no need to register your computer
with CMU Network Registration in advance. Because the dialup modem
pool requires you to authenticate using your Andrew ID, you will
automatically gain access to the campus network after successfully
dialing in and authenticating.
