Dear Doherty Residents,
Following are the meeting notes from the Doherty "Food for Thoughts".
Issue: The TESA entrance door lock is difficult to open. Residents have
to dip their key in the lock several times before it opens.
Response: Work order number #W071392 has been submitted to clean the
stripe reader.
Issue: Student would like more lighting in their living room
Response: Doherty Apartments were constructed in 1954 to be use as housing
for married students. The cost to construct lighting in these spaces would
be astronomical and we would be more than happy to supply more floor or
table lamps.
Issue: The current floor lamps are cumbersome.
Response: This type of floor lamp is what we currently stock although there
are different styles it also depends on which furniture plan is also in the
building. Housing will review lamp styles before future purchases.
Issue: The new cabinets have less space than last year
Response: In a direct comparison the new cabinets actually have slightly
more space including extra drawer space. This does give the apartment a
much warmer and residential feel.
Issue: Students would like a buzzer system at entrance doors
Response: There is a phone system in place that dials directly to your
individual apartment. Buzzing in callers is not considered adequate
security.
Issue: Furniture change request process isn't quick enough
Response: During opening there are more than 1700 furniture requests
submitted during a two week period. The coordinator of facility services
works diligently to accommodate all requests. We also can only deliver what
we have in stock and then we redistribute what is taken in.
Issue: More outlets in rooms
Response: That may be possible but this will also refer back to how the
building was constructed some 50 years ago. Students today come with more
appliances than students did during that period (computers, TV's,
microwaves and personal stereo's) and at that time it was sufficient.
Additional electrical requirements will be addressed in a major future
renovation.
Issue: An additional Ethernet connection in living room would be a nice
addition.
Response: Most apartments have enough connections but if there is one that
is short a work would possible solve that problem. Doherty is also now
covered with the wireless andrew network.
Comments:
The Housing staff is friendly and go beyond the call of duty to assist
students. One student was pleased with the timely response to change out
her bed. One student was pleased with the care shown while she was
participating in a study abroad program last year. Upon her return to
Carnegie Mellon, housing services went out of their way to assist her.
Warm regards,
Louis McCauley
Assistant Director For Facilities
