Dear Campus Residents,

As you know this fall we implemented the use of DIP + PIN for housing
access using our TESA electronic locks. This change has allowed housing
access to be placed on student ID cards, and many of you have taken
advantage of that added convenience.

Currently, your door electronic lock updates and resets itself once a week
on Wednesday mornings. Beginning Monday, October 8, 2001 we will be
changing this function to a daily update. This is to eliminate the delays
we are experiencing in the DIP + PIN mode activation when we have to repair
or update a lock's hardware or software.

For most users this will be a transparent change. However, if you are a
resident who often "double-dips" open your lock and leaves it that way for
long periods of time, please be aware that early each morning, sometime
between 3am and 6am, your lock will reset itself and lock. Because we
strongly encourage everyone to LOCK YOUR DOOR when going to bed at night
and to always CARRY YOUR KEY, this daily updating should not create a
problem.

On a related topic, we are concerned about the significant number of
residents who are using campus police for evening lock out services in lieu
of carrying your room keys. We are consulting with campus police, and it
is likely that chronic offenders will begin to be billed for this service
as you would be if you needed a new key from the housing office during the
day. Lock outs are not considered emergencies, and you may have to wait
for campus police to open your room depending on what other priorities they
have in the evening.

PLEASE lock your room doors and carry your keys at all times, this is for
your safety!

Regards,

Tim Michael
Director of Housing Services
