Dear Housing DSL Subscribers:
It has been brought to our attention that some individuals on the
Telerama DSL Network in our Oakland Apartments have been running Aimster
and/or Napster type services, used for sharing and trading MP3 (music)
resources. Carnegie Mellon Computing Services does not allow this type of
activity on its network, because it results in an unfair use of shared network
resources, and is in violation of the Campus Computing Policies.
The use of these types of applications is even more noticeable on a DSL
network because of the limited bandwidth, and Telerama and Housing Services
also cannot allow this type of activity. Any resident participating in
Aimster or Napster sharing/trading on the DSL network will be subject to
suspension from the Telerama DSL network as outlined in CMU Computing
Policies, which can be found at http://www.cmu.edu/computing/policies.html
Housing and Telerama are continually working on ways to improve
bandwidth speed on the Oakland DSL network, and believe that MP3 sharing and
trading on the network has been counter to that effort. Therefore we ask for
your cooperation in this matter by not engaging in this activity.
Telerama will be contacting any residents whose machine is detected as
engaging in this type of activity. Please feel free to contact Telerama
directly at 412-688-3200 if you need further clarification of their network
computing policies. We thank you in advance for your cooperation in this
matter.
Sincerely,
Dave Lubovinsky
