Dear Oakland Apartment Residents

        Here is the up to the minute status regarding the collective DSL service
in the Oakland Apartments.

        It seems that Verizon is still cleaning up after Sept. 11th, as well as
trying to service their backlog created by focusing on repair efforts in
DC and NYC.  What that means is that the first of Telerama's planned
upgrades still has no confirmed date.  This is the increase from Verizon
to Telerama, which is where the current bottle neck in the network lies.
There is still optimism that this will be finished this week, there are
however, no guarantees from Verizon.

        In better news, they are still on track for their second system upgrade.
This will increase the speed from Telerama to the internet as a whole.
The date for installation is set at Thursday and seems to still be on
track. This is an upgrade from a company other than Verizon so it is not
being affected by the repair effort.  The upgrade will allow more
traffic from Telerama to the internet, and may afford some DSL speed
increase, however until the first install occurs, the benefit will be
minimal.

        We shall keep you posted as more information becomes available, and as
soon as the date of install is confirmed from Verizon for the installs.
If there are any additional questions please feel free to address them
to me. Additionally, as the speed increase has not occured yet, the
modems for loan are still availble from Housing Services.  If you qould
like to dial into the intrnet for now, and do not have a modem, please
stop into housing and sign a modem out.  Thank you.
