Dear Fall 2001 Campus Resident,

Since opening we have been granting requests for housing license agreement
cancellations from current residents with a "Triple Your Deposit
Back"($600) or your first month's off-campus rent up to $750, whichever is
greater. These cancellations have been creating additional spaces for us to
use in bringing the remaining first year students to campus from our hotel
temporary housing.

We anticipate that we will stop receiving cancellations by September 21,
2001 and will at that time stop canceling housing license agreements for
the 2001-02 academic year.

If you are still contemplating a housing license agreement cancellation and
move off campus, please contact Adria Greene in the housing office
immediately at asgreene@andrew.cmu.edu to discuss your options and
timeline. We don't want any residents to be caught off-guard, making
off-campus plans and then discovering that they cannot cancel their campus
housing.

Because of our need to bring the remaining first year students to campus
from our hotel temporary housing, we have created the following options to
reduce your rent:

A). Foster a first year: If you are interested in turning your double into
a triple or your triple into a quad, you could save money. For example, if
a double converted to a triple, the three residents would split the room
rate of a two-person occupied space. A prime double room converted to a
triple would save each of the three residents $763 over the fall semester
prime double rate.

B. Increasing Roommates: If you and your roommate have a friend who could
consolidate to your room from other campus housing and turn your double
into a triple or your triple into a quad, you could save money. This option
is similar to the "foster a first year" program, except it allows you to
share your space with someone you know.

C). Upperclass Swap: If you are an upperclass student who is willing to
give up your current campus space and move into temporary housing, we will
credit your account $800.00. Your accommodations will be in the Shady Side
Inn. Spring semester, you will be moved into an on-campus space, subject to
availability.

D). Your Creative Idea: Based on your current campus housing, you may
have some other idea to assist with bringing the remaining first-year
students into campus housing from the hotels. Please contact us to discuss
your idea and how it would work!

All options will typically be for fall semester only. This offer is good
for a limited time only until we get the cancellations we need to
accommodate the first year class. (Please be sure to contact us BEFORE you
commit yourself to an off-campus lease!)

So, if you're on the fence about moving off-campus or you are interested in
exploring the four options listed above, now's the time! All our community
housing resources are available to you and can be found at

To request cancellation of your housing license agreement or to ask other
housing-related questions, please give us a call at 412-268-2139 or send
email to univhous@andrew.cmu.edu.

We hope to hear from you soon!

Lionel Maten
