Onity Locks at Carnegie Mellon

Options

The locks being used at Carnegie Mellon are similar to that in the picture on the left, but include the optional PIN pad as well. The outside of the door uses a lever handle, while the inside had a standard door knob in most cases.

Appearance

There may be some subtle differences in the metal finishes of the locks between buildings, which was done in some cases to better match the decor of the building.

Durability

These locks are designed to withstand weather conditions commonly found in Pennsylvania (eg. heat, rain, snow, ice, etc.). However, residents should take care not to allow dirt and fluids to fall into the card slot of the lock. Also, attempting to disassemble any portion of the lock will likely result in failure of the device. Lock damage that is determined to be caused by abuse of the lock will be viewed as vandalism, and billable as such.

Key Cards at Carnegie Mellon

The key card to be used by Carnegie Mellon Housing is shown above. Each card has a unique serial number and a small slot cut into one side, for the purpose of attaching the card to a key chain or lanyard. Basic intructions for using the key card are on the reverse side.

Residents should be careful not to bend, mutilate, scratch or de-magnetize the card. Likewise, manually hole-punching these cards can result in permanent damage to the card, making it unusable.
