SMOKE FREE HOUSING
INTRODUCTIONIn addition to working with Student Health Services in offering smoking cessation classes, Housing & Dining Services and Student Dormitory Council have worked diligently to increase smoke-free housing options. Yearly task forces investigated the need and demand for smoke-free housing options and recommended increasing numbers of smoke-free spaces each year. Over 90% of our total occupancy is smoke-free spaces. POLICY The university attempts to accommodate both smokers and
non-smokers by providing both smoke-free buildings and smoke-free areas within
existing facilities. However
when the needs of people who wish to smoke conflict with the needs of those
who want smoke-free air, the need for smoke-free air will have priority. In
private residential areas, where allowed, smoking will be permitted as long
as all the residents of the room are in agreement. Smoking
is prohibited at all times within 20 feet of the entrance to any housing building
and also in all public areas inside housing buildings including entranceways,
lounges, hallways, stairways and rest rooms. The smoke-free living option does not allow the smoking of tobacco, or any other substance, in these residence hall areas in order to provide a smoke-free atmosphere for non-smokers. Violations of the smoke free policy will be handled as a
disciplinary matter and may result in reassignment from this area. DESIGNATED SMOKE FREE HOUSES All buildings with the exception of Fairfax Apartments and
Webster Hall are entirely smoke free. Understanding the addictive nature of smoking and that breaking
the habit is extremely difficult for
many people, Housing & Dining Services will continue to support efforts
by Student Health Services that assist students who elect to
quit smoking. We will annually
review our smoke free housing offerings to determine its impact, effectiveness,
and demand. If you have questions regarding smoke free housing at Carnegie Mellon University, please contact Housing & Dining Services, via email at plaid@andrew.cmu.edu or telephone at 412-268-2139.
