Moving Checklist

This page provides a detailed list of items to complete for your move to Pittsburgh.

Prior to your arrival in Pittsburgh, it is best to begin by familiarizing yourself with the local neighborhoods. Descriptions and average rental rates are included in the neighborhood section.

  • Figure out what you can afford.
  • Find an apartment in Pittsburgh and visit it to ensure it is of acceptable quality
  • Read comments that tenants have posted about many Pittsburgh landlords in our Tenant Comment Database (coming soon!)
  • Notify current landlord of lease termination
  • Make arrangements to shut off all utilities in current apartment
  • Arrange for new utilities in Pittsburgh. Utilities for the Pittsburgh area are available here.
  • Fill out change of address forms with IRS, DMV, and Post Office.
  • Change voter registration from your old home to Pennsylvania. Registering in Pennsylvania can be done when you change your drivers license.
  • Make new banking arrangements in Pittsburgh. See a list of banks in Pittsburgh on the Living in Pittsburgh page.
  • Transfer car insurance to your new address.
  • Obtain renter's insurance for your new apartment.
  • Familiarize yourself with the area. The Living in Pittsburgh page gives an overview of the area.
  • Contact CMU's Housing and Dining Services Office if you have any questions about your move.
  • If you are a graduate student, feel free to contact your Peer Mentor. This person will be a great resource and aid in your transition.
