The Super Bowl is Sunday and you can watch it on HDTV!

Telecom and Housing & Dining Services are pleased to announce that the two HDTV channels are now fully operational.  As previously announced, the two channels are WTAE-DT and KDKA-HD.  The channel assignments, though, have been changed for better viewing.  They are now to be found at 110-1 and 110-11, respectively.

In order for these channels to tune in on a TV, the following conditions must be met:
**An HDTV set with integral QAM tuner must be used; or
**An HDTV set-top box (sometimes called an HDTV tuner) with a QAM decoder
must be used; or
**An HDPC TV tuner card with QAM decoder must be installed in a computer.

If an HDTV (with QAM tuner) set is used, the Hi Def channels can be found by running the "auto-program/auto-tune" function after verifying that the set is connected to the campus cable system and that the tuner is looking for "cable".

If a set-top box (with QAM tuner) is used, connect the input of the STB to the campus cable system and then connect the STB to your TV. The HDTV STB will find the two new channels.

If an HDPC card is used, connect the computer's TV card input to the campus cable system and search for the channels.

It is imperative that whatever route is chosen, that the tuning device be QAM-capable.  Many "HDTVs" are actually "HDTV-ready" or "HDTV-capable" meaning that a tuner is still needed.

Telecom has found that the easiest way to select the HD channels after they have been programmed into the tuner is to simply push the 'up arrow" key. Most remote controls have no way to type in 110-1 or -11.

The Super Bowl will be broadcast on WTAE-DT (channel 110-1) and WTAE (channel 4).  So, even if you don't have an HDTV, you can still watch and cheer on the Steelers on Carnegie Mellon channel 4!

If, after having exhausted all serious attempts to tune these new stations, you still have difficulty with this process, please call 412-268-8500 (the Telecom Trouble line).

Have a great weekend,
(and Go Steelers!!)
