NEWS FROM THE NUTRITIONIST
Our friends at Student Health Services have some important tips to help
prevent colds and the flu, common during the winter because of more time
spent indoors where germs can spread easier. Use these ten tips for a
healthier winter:
1. Wash your hands frequently. This is often your best defense. Wash
the
entire hand using warm water and soap. When drying your hands, use the
paper
towel to turn off the water and open the door.
2. Clean your ‘shared spaces’. Remember phones, keyboards,
steering wheels,
office equipment, lab areas and other items used by several people during
the day.
3. Get a flu shot. Flu shot clinics will be held December 1st, 5th, and
7th.
4. Get more sleep. During sleep, your body’s immune system goes
into high
gear to protect from illness. Lack of sleep can reduce immune functioning
making you susceptible to sickness!
5. Drink more water. Carry a bottle with you. In the winter, it is easy
to
overlook your thirst and get dehydrated.
6. Eat more fruits and veggies. Remember to get a piece of fruit with
your
lunch block every day. Consider a veggie stir-fry from Bento Bowl this
week.
7. Limit Alcohol intake. Alcohol can be dehydrating which, in turn, may
decrease your resistance to bacteria.
8. Continue your regular exercise program. Try to maintain a 3-4 day
a week
exercise routine. Light exercise (walking) can help a cold.
9. Avoid putting your hands near your eyes, nose and mouth. Most bacteria
and germs are spread from a surface to your hands and face. Think back
to
tips one and two.
10. Finally, listen to your body. It will tell you when you’re
ready to get
back in the game. In the meantime, take care of yourself and rest- there
is
no sense in passing your germs onto others!
Happy Eating,
Paula Martin, RD, LDN
