THIS WEEK IN DINING NOVEMBER 6 - 12, 2006
This newsletter is available in PDF format @
http://www.cmu.edu/dining/pdfs/thisWeek/TWIDnov6_12_06.pdf.
Welcome to another This Week In Dining. Monday’s weather may be
uncommonly
warm for November, don’t pull out the winter jacket just yet, the
weather is forecast is in the 50s and 60s all week. Enjoy a smoothie from
the Carnegie Mellon Café (the Tofu smoothie is great!) or Andy's
in the UC before it gets too cold outside. And since it's warmer than
last week, there's no reason to miss taking your trips to the poll this
Tuesday!
Are you going to be up LATE? As the semester enters its final weeks, you
may need options for later at night. Fortunately, there are venues open
late all over campus, check out:
Skibo, open until 2am everyday
Maggie Murph Café, open until 1am Sun-Thursday
Carnegie Mellon Café, open until Midnight everyday
The Underground, open until 11pm everyday
WHAT'S @ SCHATZ
This Wednesday (11/9), Schatz will be having a Premium Entrée dinner
from
5-8pm. Check out the November table tents for more dates to remember!

News from the NUTRITIONIST
Voting time is here, which of the following will you elect to pick up
at
Entropy? Vote true or false as part of your personal campaign for smart
and
healthy eating.
o Low sugar or low carb cookies are calorie-free.
o Baked chips have a lot fewer calories then regular chips.
o A frozen vegetarian entrée is always better for you.
o Low-fat foods offer better nutrition.
o Fruit drinks count as fruit servings.
o Energy drinks are better for you then soft drinks.
All of the statements are false! Low sugar or low carb cookies don’t
have
sucrose, but they get calories from other carbs, fats and proteins. The
difference in chips usually isn’t that much: 150 calories per ounce
for
regular chips compared to 120 calories for baked. “Vegetarian”
means no
meat, poultry or fish; a vegetarian entrée may have cheese or high-fat
sauces that bring up the calories and fat. Low-fat foods don’t necessarily
offer better nutrition, and the calories (mostly from added carbs) may
equal that of full-fat versions. Fruit drinks are basically flavored,
sweetened water; although they might be fortified with vitamin C, they
don’t have all the nutrients 100% juice does. Energy drinks are
full of sugar and caffeine and share the same health problems as soft
drinks. Don’t believe the marketing and all the hype; stick to only
one energy drink per day. Here are a few tips:
o Be skeptical about your own “healthy food” assumptions.
o Read the fine print. Compare packages; use the nutrition facts labels
before you buy.
o Remember, portion distortion is everywhere. Pay attention to your
hunger and stop eating when you are satisfied, not “stuffed”.
o Remember to Vote on Nov 7th.
Happy Eating,
Paula Martin, RD, LDN
