NEWS FROM THE NUTRITIONIST
October is Cancer Awareness Month. Here are a few tips and strategies
to
lower your risk:
•Stay physically active. As the weather turns cooler and class demands
increase, keep taps on your activity level. Take a walk for a study break,
enjoy indoor racquet ball, or take a group exercise class.
•Eat five to nine servicing of fruits and vegetables daily. Their
antioxidant properties may be cancer protective. The UC salad bar is open
until 8pm so take advantage of the large selection of vegetables and grab
some fruit to go!
•Trim Fat. Having deep fried foods daily? Limiting fried foods will
reduce
the amount of saturated fat and keep trans fat as low as possible to lower
your risk of colon and breast cancer. (Men get breast cancer too!) Consider
a hearty vegetable soup or whole wheat wrap sandwich with plenty of added
veggies instead of your staple of fries and chicken fingers.
•Limit alcoholic drinks. For women, no more than one drink daily
and for
men, no more than two drinks daily is best. One drink equals 1.5 oz
distilled sprits, 12 oz. beer, and 5 oz wine. The more you drink, the
more
your risk increases for certain cancers.
•Shift you focus away from counting calories and toward consuming
nutrient-rich foods. Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans,
lean
animal proteins, and fat-free dairy products. In additional to the cancer
protective benefits of these foods, these high quality foods will help
promote a healthy body weight. A healthy body weight seems to reduce cancer
risk.
Happy Eating,
Paula Martin, RD, LDN
